Experience a scenic return drive from Cape Town to the southernmost tip of Africa and the actual meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans at Cape Agulhas.

Itinerary

Your driver will fetch you at your accommodation and start your +/- 3 hours drive through the Overberg region where you’ll arrive at Cape Agulhas. Your first visit will be to the historic red and white Cape Agulhas Lighthouse that marks the tip of Africa. Dare to climb the 72 steps up to this 160-year-old icon for some amazing views of Cape Agulhas. Further down the road is the famous Cape Agulhas monument and the southernmost tip of Africa where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans actually meet. Have your picture taken at this monument and dip your toes simultaneously into each ocean. The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is home to striking visual displays and a fascinating collection of shipwreck artifacts for those interested in learning more about the famous shipwrecks that have occurred along this stretch of coastline. Learn about the “woman and children first” protocol which originated when the Birkenhead sank (1852) and later became known as the Birkenhead Drill. We’ll stop by the Birkenhead Estate in Standford which is the first wine and beer brewing estate in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a fantastic beer tasting. We return along the coastline through Hermanus, which offers the best land-based whale watching in the world (in season from June – November). If you wish, you can enjoy some wine tasting in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde Valley (Heaven and Earth), visit Stony Point Penguin Colony in Betty’s Bay and slowly return via Clarens Drive following the False Bay coastline, where on a clear day you can see all the way across to Cape Point.

Please note : During whale season, there may be an opportunity to join boat-based whale watching in Hermanus (own account at +/- R900 pp) which departs from the new harbour at 11am, 12pm and 2pm daily (subject to availability and weather).
